Course Objective: For students to learn the fundamentals of Lean Six Sigma and immediately be able to immediately work in a Lean environment. A graduate from this course is able to understand the basic expectations of a Lean organization and their role within it
- (Principles of Lean, Cost of Quality, 8 Deadly Wastes)
- Lean, originally pioneered by Toyota Motor Company in the 1940’s, is a methodology aimed at identifying and eliminating waste. This class introduces students to the very real but sometimes difficult to identify cost of poor quality, then covers the eight deadly wastes that appear in any organization and the basic principles of lean.
Root Cause Analysis
- (Fishbone diagram, Run chart, 5 Why analysis, Pareto chart, FMEA [Failure Mode and Effects Analysis])
- Building upon Lean Introduction and Foundational Lean Tools, this class pivots from making sure things are going right to what happens when something goes wrong. Students will learn how to perform a robust root cause analysis in order to identify the cause(s) of a problem, correct the associated defects, and prevent them from recurring.
Foundational Lean Tools
- (5S, Standard Work, Visual Management)
- Building upon Lean Introduction, this class introduces the basic tools of Lean. 5S – a physical organizational strategy upon which all other improvements are based – combined with standard work and visual management allow an organization to have consistent, efficient, and effective work flow. Students will learn how to implement 5S in a way that makes sense and minimizes disruption to the overall process. Students will also learn the difference between visual display and visual control, and how standard work can minimize errors by promoting a consistent process.
